According to a Wall Street Journal article, a number of start-up companies are working to transform the trucking sector by using mobile technology to connect truck drivers with companies that have goods to ship. The start-ups are hoping to eliminate the need for traditional third-party brokers that pair customers and truckers for a fee. Many of the start-up companies are targeting freight companies that accept both smaller shipments and full truckloads.

For investors, the trucking sector represents a substantial market opportunity and several of the start-up companies have received funding from the founders of major enterprises, including Amazon and Uber. However, analysts report that the technology-driven start-ups face large challenges, one being truckers’ aversion to adopting new technology. Proponents of the start-up companies argue that the mobile solutions help customers find a trucker faster, enable truckers to make more money per shipment, and fill empty space in trucks more efficiently.
